Healthy Dessert Options Anyone Can Make

Who doesn’t like desserts? No matter who you are and your age, having a little sweetness at the end of a top-notch dinner is a satisfying conclusion to your meal. But unfortunately, people at risk of severe health problems, especially the elderly, must watch what they put into their bodies. So to help you make the most of your meals, here are four healthy dessert options anyone can make and enjoy.

Blueberry Cobbler Pie

This uniquely fabulous dish is nutritious. Did you know that blueberries contain antioxidants that improve brain function and vision? It also helps lower the risk of getting cancer.

Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups of blueberries, either fresh or frozen
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 3 cups split sugar
  • Cornstarch, two tablespoons
  • Baking soda, two tablespoons
  • 14 teaspoons of nutmeg, ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon of mace
  • 1 teaspoon of salt, split
  • 5 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 glass of whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, fresh
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups piping hot water

Cooking Steps:

  1. Set the oven to 350°F.
  2. Cover a 9 x 13 baking dish with blueberries. Add a lemon juice drizzle, then place the baking dish aside.
  3. Mix the flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, milk, butter, baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, vanilla, nutmeg, and mace in a medium basin. Then evenly spoon a layer of berries on top.
  4. Combine cornstarch, salt, and the remaining 1 1/2 cups of sugar. Sprinkle this mixture over the batter you made in the previous step.
  5. Pour boiling water evenly over the cobbler’s top. Use a wooden spoon handle to poke holes into the batter.
  6. The cobbler should be baked at 350°F for an hour or until the top is golden brown and the berries are boiling.
  7. After taking it out of the oven, serve it warm or at room temperature.

This recipe serves eight to ten people.

Sugar-Free Apple Pie

Since apple pie is America’s favorite dessert, everyone ought to be able to eat it. However, even those on a diabetic diet can enjoy a slice with this recipe from Taste of Home magazine!

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup thawed frozen apple juice concentrate
  • 8 cups finely sliced, peeled tart apples
  • 8 tsp. sugar substitute
  • 1 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 2 slices of 9-inch pie pastry
  • 2 tsp. cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp. butter

Cooking Steps:

  1. Prep your oven by heating it to 375 degrees. Prepare one layer of 9-inch pastry dough by shaping it to fit your pie pan. Place the pan aside.
  2. Add apple juice concentrate, sugar substitute, cornstarch, and cinnamon in a small basin.
  3. Place apples in a line along the bottom of the pie, then cover each apple with the liquid.
  4. Cut the butter into small pieces and add them to the mixture.
  5. When the filling is finished, top with the last slice of pastry dough.
  6. Form the dough over the dish and seal the edges by pinching the sides.
  7. Make vents by cutting slits, or get inventive and slice up a cute pattern.
  8. Bake the pie for 35 minutes at the initial temperature.
  9. After that period, turn the heat to 400 degrees and continue baking for 15 to 20 minutes or until the apples are soft and tender.

Take the pie out of the oven, let it cool on a rack, then devour it!

Consider letting the pie remain in the fridge for an additional hour before cutting into it for the cleanest slices.

Broiled Plums with Mascarpone Cream

The cream’s richness in this dish from Martha Stewart counterbalances the plums’ sweetness.

Ingredients:

  • Five medium-sized black plums, each half-pitted. Select ripe fruit that is not overly soft (the flesh should yield to gentle pressure). Use red plums rather than black ones if you prefer the tart flavor.
  • 6 Tbsp. sugar, packaged in light brown
  • 1/4 cup of mascarpone cheese
  • 3 Tbsp. brandy
  • 14 cups of heavy cream

Cooking Steps:

  1. Heat the broiler.
  2. Put the cut sides of the plum halves up in a single layer in an 8-inch baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle 1/4 cup sugar over the plums and pour the brandy over them. Eight to ten minutes under the broiler will soften the plums and caramelize the sugar.
  4. Combine the mascarpone, cream, and the remaining two tablespoons of sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer with the whisk attachment.
  5. Beat the mixture for about two minutes or until soft peaks form. Add whipped mascarpone cream on top of the roasted plums.

And that’s it! You’re done!
